What is Safety Relief Valve?
Safety valve (Pressure Safety Valves, Pressure Relief Valves, and Thermal Relief Valves) & Rupture Disc provides overpressure protection for equipment or system. It is independent mechanical device serves as last layer of protection and prevents failure due to overpressure.
Regulations, Code & Standard Requirement
ASME requires at least one safety valve on all pressure vessels. Indian codes & regulations like IBR/SMPV requires Safety valve on pressure vessels (LPG, C4s and Lighter storages, Cylinders and specific pressure vessels in plant). Almost all safety valves are designed according to API520/521 and 526.
For any new process plant facility or addition of equipments overpressure protection by optimum mechanical design pressure and providing proper sized safety valve is must. This will ensure safe operation of plant in all worst scenarios with optimum investment.
Regular review of the adequacy relief valves provided with respect to changes made in the plant and resize of equipments is required to maintain same safety level of the plant.
